Author's Introduction
The idea for The Island was conceived during a late night drive over the Cascades a number of years ago, born of the desperation and despair of watching this country being dragged off to war by the Bush-Cheney Administration. During that long and solitary drive, I wondered what a sane and humane society would look like, compared to…well, ours. This novel was my answer to my own question.
Here is how the story opens…
“Okay, sir, I think we’re all set up. Just speak into the microphone whenever you’re ready.”
“Where do you want me to start?”
“Start wherever you want. Start at the beginning.”
“Yes, well, that’s the question, isn’t it?”
“What?”
“Where did it all begin?”
“Then…then just start anywhere.”
“So maybe I’ll start before the beginning.”
“Before the beginning?”
