October 2021

WordFest still in quarantine until new year

Thankfully, vaccination rates in Cowlitz County are increasing and the hospitalization rate and deaths due to Covid are falling, so we look forward to resuming WordFest meetings in 2022. Be safe, be well!

And let us not forget this time we are living through...

Mystery author Jan Bono in Longview Saturday, Oct 23.

Long Beach writer Jan Bono will be at The Broadway Barrel Room (formerly Cassava Coffee Shop,) 1333 Broadway Ave., this Saturday, October 23, from 1:00-3:00 pm to meet fans and celebrate the conclusion of her Sylvia Avery Cozy Mystery Series with the sixth book, Tsunami Warning.

“I hope to see my Longview WordFest friends, along with their friends, on October 23rd,” says Jan. “This will be my only appearance in Cowlitz County this fall, so please stop by and say hello. I’ve missed you!”

Broadway Barrel Room now open for business

Visiting Jan will be a good opportunity to check out the former Cassava space and meet owners, Jacob and Jacqueline Misiak.
Longtime Kalama residents, Jacob and Jacqui are thrilled to offer their family-friendly establishment, offering a range of beers, but also non-alcoholic beverages and a select menu. Same intimate and cozy atmosphere, open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 11 am to 9:00 pm (10 pm-Fri and Sat.)

Samantha Waltz tells poignant story of forbidden love, inspired from her father's life.

Samantha Waltz is the award-winning author of 70 anthologized personal essays and the editor of Blended: Writers On The Stepfamily Experience. Acclaimed Portland author Molly Gloss says, "Samantha Waltz writes with scrupulous honesty and compassion, in a voice as pure and clear as a mountain lake.” The Choice of Men is her first adult novel.

A young Mormon finds first love on his pre-World War II mission to France. But Heber Averil’s awkward ardor turns from exhilaration to disaster when his missionary companion angrily rebuffs him. Heber’s near drowning convinces him that God is angry, and he vows to never again touch another man. Yet less than a year later, he finds himself in the arms of an alluring Frenchman, and Heber learns vows to God are hard to keep if the same God instilled in him an attraction to other men.

As the years pass, his struggle between the church’s teachings, his marriage to a wonderful woman, and his love of their daughter tears at his soul, haunting every aspect of his life. Can Heber reconcile the outwardly righteous Mormon with the man inside, a man God made to love other men?

$12.99. Available at amazon, bookshop.org,  Barnes and Noble, Powell’s, and through your favorite bookstore.

Talk about your book on the radio...in England

Portland author and Wordfest guest Jeff Stookey recommends this free opportunity to talk about your books in the United Kingdom.

Jeff assures me this is not a scam. He did it himself and found the process relatively painless, the radio hosts helpful and encouraging, and the experience rewarding.

Also check out Jeff's website (
https://www.jeffstookey.com/) for his newsletter articles and a gallery of vintage pictures from the 1920s, collected and curated by his partner photographer Ken Barker, some that appeared in his Medicine for the Blues trilogy.
The trilogy captures the lives of a Portland doctor and his jazz piano playing partner at a time when the Ku Klux Klan was prominent in Oregon politics.

"Social Distancing of an Extrovert"

Social Distancing of an Extrovert

I, like a river,
Have been diverted by the ruthless era.
From “Northern Elegies – the Fifth,” Anna Akhmatova, Leningrad, 1944

I am a sweater with raveling sleeves
harboring moths in my folds.
I am a rotting rose hosting a worm,
milk left out of the fridge,
a broken window, a dropped plate,
dirty laundry collecting mold,
a bad dream,
a lone wolf kicked out of the pack,
a junk bond, picked lock, I am debris.
 . . .
I half remember who I was before
when with such cheer we toasted 2020 in,
and I know what I’ve become, see above,
but I don’t know the woman
the aftermath will introduce to me, expecting
to use my name, inhabit my body, wear my clothes.

Book Review

The Ministry for the Future
Kim Stanley Robinson

The situation is not hopeless.
Not yet.

The novel opens with a scene from hell: In 2025, India experiences an unprecedented heat wave (Think of June’s heat dome in the Pacific Northwest, only more intense and protracted.) Twenty million people die within two weeks as their bodies stop sweating and begin baking. In the face of this monumental catastrophe, the nations of the earth… do nothing. Again.

A Bit of Whimsy

Photo-reflection

                        Autumn Glows

Spring throbs to its new life beat,
summer simmers and shimmers in the heat,
                               winter everywhere slows,
                               but autumn ... autumn glows.
